Jewel Kilcher is a singer-songwriter, guitarist born on May 23, 1974 in Payson, Utah. She grow up in Alaska and never had a choice about her musical career, she was born into it. From the age of six she started performing with her singer-songwriter parents.
Many artist crack and fall under the pressures of performing and producing new music. Sometimes the stress of trying to make it to the top can can leave a mental toll. In biographies it never talked about her having mental break downs, but no one's to say she never endured mini episodes of emotional crumbles.
She wrote the song Life Uncommon in 1998. Jewel writes: “Come on you unbelievers, move out of the way/There is a new army coming and we are armed with faith/To live, we must give/To live.” in one of the stanzas and “And lend your voices only to sounds of freedom/No longer lent your strength to that/Which you wish to be free from/Fill your lives with love and bravery/And we shall lead a life uncommon.” in another.
The inner and outer scuffle for change is a hard enough on it’s own. In order to change the world you need to start with the society around you, but more importantly with the assurance of your meaning first. If you can’t overpower your own problems how can you inspire to change the civilization around you? With these lyrics its apparent the author had inner issues, but finally go to her destined, free destination. She could’ve been dealing with depression, her physical image, family issues, which all alter with your thinking and acceptance for everything. She was lifted and inspired to walk with love and bravery hand-in-hand, a solution. Her answers for outclassing darker demons.
Its apparent there's many reasons why she felt the need to write down these lyrics: issues, problems and struggles. Everyone deals with them, homeless people, singer-songwriters, doctors and Kings. Triumph over adversity is everywhere, this is the first of the three works I studied in revealing the significance of this theme.
